Historic Home Interior Design in Phoenix

Interior design and adaptive reuse for Phoenix's historic districts, preserving the character that makes these homes and buildings irreplaceable.

Areas We Serve: Phoenix Historic Districts

Intro: Mackenzie grew up in the historic towns of the Midwest, on brick streets lined with big Victorian homes, so she knows her way around an old house: the charm, the creaky floors, and the quality of millwork we just don't see made anymore. When she moved to Phoenix, she expected mostly tract homes (she'd only ever visited Chandler), and was delighted to rent a house in Arcadia and discover the charm hiding in the historic neighborhoods nearby. It wasn't long before the design calls for these homes started coming in, and they've been some of our favorite projects ever since.

Where we've worked: We've designed historic homes across Coronado, F.Q. Story, and Encanto-Palmcroft, including the Soulful Sanctuary home, featured on this year's Encanto Home Tour. We've worked on properties listed on the historic register as well as homes simply within the historic districts. Either way, our approach is the same: preserve the charm and the history while caring for the home so future generations can enjoy it too.

The architecture we love: Phoenix's historic homes are full of character, and we especially love its bungalows, Craftsman homes, and Spanish Colonial Revivals. These homes have architectural features and materials specific to their era, and it's critical to work with a designer who understands and respects them rather than stripping them out.

Adaptive reuse and historic buildings: Our love of historic spaces extends well beyond homes. We've brought historic Phoenix buildings back to life through adaptive reuse, including DeSoto Central Market, Equality Health, and Reshoevn8r, along with our work in Roosevelt Row. Both of our own offices have been in historic downtown Phoenix buildings that we revived through adaptive reuse. If you're reimagining a historic building for a new purpose, it's exactly the kind of work we love most.

What it really takes (and why expertise matters): Designing in a historic home or building is not the same as designing in new construction. We regularly plan around foundation issues, framing surprises, and unpermitted additions, the realities that derail a project when the team doesn't know to expect them. These homes also tend to have limited space and storage, and a real tension between preserving the original charm and modernizing things like climate control. We know how to navigate all of it, protecting what makes a place special while making it work for how you live now.

Districts we serve: Coronado, Encanto-Palmcroft, Willo, F.Q. Story, Roosevelt, Garfield, Margarita, and the historic neighborhoods throughout central Phoenix.
