Smart & Sustainable Design: The Truth Behind the Buzzwords

Designing Spaces That Work for You and the Planet

My journey to sustainable interior design didn’t begin in a studio—it began in a psychology classroom. My final undergraduate elective in entomology unexpectedly introduced me to the book Cradle to Cradle, a groundbreaking text on sustainable systems. That experience fundamentally shifted my career trajectory, guiding me toward the interior design profession with a mission: to positively impact two of the most environmentally harmful industries—construction and retail.

A trip to Bali years later reinforced this commitment. Amidst stunning natural beauty, I encountered devastating pollution. Bali receives waste from across the globe and lacks the infrastructure to manage it. Trash burns in the open, polluting the air and endangering communities. This firsthand experience deepened my resolve to design spaces that not only serve people but also respect the planet.

Redefining Sustainability in Interior Design

Sustainability has become a buzzword, diluted by widespread greenwashing and misleading labels. Terms like “organic” or “FSC-certified” can obscure the true environmental impact of a product. At Mackenzie Collier Interiors, we approach sustainable interior design with intention and clarity:

  • Durability: If it doesn’t last, it isn’t sustainable.

  • Timelessness: Avoiding trend-based purchases reduces waste.

  • Transparency: We prioritize ethically made, responsibly sourced furnishings.

Materials That Matter

Natural materials such as wool, jute, and linen are excellent choices for Phoenix’s desert climate, particularly when they are high quality and long-lasting. Our sourcing philosophy has evolved over the years: we now emphasize longevity and style endurance over simply choosing "green" materials.

Whenever possible, we incorporate vintage and reclaimed items. These pieces bring character and reduce environmental impact by extending the lifecycle of existing products. They also offer a powerful way to personalize a space with history and craftsmanship.

Commercial Design with a Conscience

Sustainability applies equally to residential and commercial projects. In fact, the scale of commercial work makes the environmental stakes even higher.

We help business owners:

  • Source restored or pre-owned commercial furniture to reduce both costs and environmental impact

  • Improve workplace health and productivity through intentional design

  • Create eco-conscious spaces that encourage client engagement and satisfaction

Challenging Sustainability Stereotypes

It is a misconception that sustainable design requires sacrificing comfort, aesthetics, or budget. In truth, many of the most beautiful and functional design choices are also the most sustainable. High-quality materials, ethical manufacturing, and local sourcing not only elevate a space but also reduce its footprint.

Sustainability is not about perfection; it’s about making informed, intentional decisions that align with your values and lifestyle.
